I can still remember that time last year when I told myself that I would be swearing off liquid lipsticks due to that fact that my lips were so dried out. However, many things have changed since then; I found an extremely hydrating lip treatment (mentioned in my 2017 favourites here) and I stumbled upon some really decent liquid lipsticks.
One range that really did blow my mind is the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks. I was extremely lucky to be sent the full range of the 10 shades before they launched and I was very impressed with its lasting power. More bout that later.
The new Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink range is said to be smudgeproof, budgeproof, waterproof and kiss proof, with the ability to last for a good 16 hours on the lips. These come in 10 super saturated shades and are meant to give a matte finish.
The 10 shades are:
The packaging comes in a rectangular tube with an arrow applicator that aids in precise application. I really like the applicator as the pointed tip does help in shaping the cupid’s bow as well as getting those sharp lines along the edges. It has a dip in the middle, which contains a good amount of product so that during application, you will not find yourself constantly dipping back into the tube for more product.
I do like the whole packaging, as the tubes are not rolling all over the place due to its rectangular shape and can be placed standing up straight with no issue. There is 5ml of product which is definitely decent as well (for comparison, Colourpop Liquid Lips contain 3.2ml and Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks contain 5.6ml). Do note, I do find that the liquid lipstick shade is a tad deeper than that on the tube when it sets on the lips but that’s no big issue for me. Just do swatch them if you can if you’re particular.
Despite these being touted as matte, I would actually say that it leans more of a satin finish to the lips that I would rather have anyway. Extreme matte finishes can look extremely dry on the lips and it can emphasis lip lines, making us look more dehydrated and *ahem* older than we actually are. I do like that when these liquid lips set, they do have a slight sheen to them, reflecting a little light and making the lips look fuller and more plump. If you are down for the extreme matte lip life, simply blot the lips with a tissue before these set completely and you’re good to go.
Here are the lip swatches of the 10 shades for you.
I am glad to share that I’ve put these through all the tests above and my lips still looked really good at the end of the day. I wore the shade 20 Pioneer (a gorgeous blue toned red) on the lips for Christmas and y’all, after a buck load of turkey, ham, cheese, pasta and beer, the red was still almost darn perfect. It did not bleed out at all and despite slight fading on the inner part of the lips, I did not feel the need to touch up. Not needing to touch up a red lip is a big deal!
On other days, my favourite shade has to be 15 Lover (a mauvey rose nude imo). I wear this almost everyday since I’ve received it. I’ve kissed some dogs and a human, ate my favourite food of fried chicken (this lasted through Popeye’s too) and drank tons of coffee and bubble tea. This truly blew my mind when it comes to lasting power. I do notice gradual fading on some days around the inner lip area but it fades nicely. I rarely ever top up my lipstick throughout the day when I wear this.
I’d recommend going in with a thin layer and applying an even coat. These are highly pigmented as it claims to be, and a little does go a long way. The darker shades can apply a tad more streaky than the lighter ones, so those could warrant another thin layer to even everything out. I also recommend applying it over a thin layer of lip balm to help with the patchiness during application if you do experience any. I did notice that if you do apply a thick layer of this formulation at one go, it can form a rubbery layer on the lips. This led to me subconscious nibbling on it (I know it sounds gross, but let’s admit, we all kinda do it…right) and that can also lead to patchiness on the lips.
This has inched its way up to my ultimate favourite liquid lip yet, beating my other favourites such as Colourpop Satin Lips and Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lips due to its amazing lasting power. You would think it to be drying considering its ability to last all day, but nope, this does not dry my lips out whatsoever. It does not add any hydration either, but that’s not what it’s meant for anyway. My lips do feel comfortable when I wear these and coming from someone who has the lips as dry as the sahara, that’s a huge plus. Removal isn’t a pain either, I simply use any oil based makeup remover and it comes off in seconds. I currently am enjoying my Garnier Micellar Oil-Infused Cleansing Water to remove these.
These were launched on 29th December 2017 and retails for SGD 17.90 each which in my opinion, is a steal. I do recommend you checking this out if you’re on the market for affordable and long lasting liquid lipsticks that aren’t drying.
Which shades caught your eye? Will you be picking up any of the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Inks?
