I think we all know how important sleep is. It is crucial for our bodies to recharge, detox and get ready for another day.
Did you also know that when you have good quality sleep, your neurons shrink by 60% to enable cerebral spinal fluid to wash through your brain so that it stays in optimum condition? It is also when the brain produces HGH (Human Growth Hormone) which helps to raise your moods, cognition, energy levels and lean muscle mass, 75% of HGH production happens when you sleep! I learnt these from The 5AM Club (book notes here!).
So sleep is so important and if you know me personally, you know I take my sleep very seriously. I was on the hunt for a good pillow as I have been waking up with kinks in my neck and back. It felt very tight and uncomfortable!
I was browsing through net a porter recently and this odd looking pillow from Nurse Jamie caught my eye. It was called the Beauty Bear Age Defy Pillow. In fact, I was laughing at it subconsciously as the shape was just bizarre to me. However, I did quite a bit of research and decided to get it in the end.
More about Nurse Jamie Age Defy Beauty Bear Pillow
The beauty bear gets its name from its unique shape. When turned sideways, it does kinda look like a bear on its hind legs.
There are two variations – the normal and the memory foam. From the reviews that I’ve watched and read, the memory foam one is thicker and more sturdy (especially in the two prongs for side sleepers). I’m also a memory foam fanatic so I could not resist. This pillow cost me a whopping USD 83. So is it worth it?
When it arrived, it was smaller than I thought it would be. I would say it is about 2/3 the size of a regular pillow. It came with a plastic carrier bag so it can be brought around for travels if you really wanted to. The pillow feels sturdy and the memory foam has a good bounce back (it isn’t the kind where you place your hand on it and the imprint remains for a few seconds).
My thoughts on the Nurse Jamie Beauty Bear
The pillow case is made out of satin and feels extremely smooth and soft. Satin is said to reduce the friction on the skin and this can help reduce the formation of creases and wrinkles not the face over time.
It took me about 3 to 4 nights to get used to the shape and size. The beauty bear fits really nicely around the neck and my neck felt supported. When placed snugly around my neck, I do notice that my head does exceed the width of the pillow by a bit. It’s not hanging out or anything, but just a note.
It can be slightly high for a back sleeper, but it’s the perfect thickness and support for side sleepers. The side prongs felt really good when I turned to the side. It gives me enough support without being too high even when I place my hand underneath. I do like how there is a gap around the cheek and nose area, as my nose isn’t squished against the pillow and I find it easier to breathe.
I love how the beauty bear feels against my skin. The satin is cool to the touch and smooth. I’d usually get a crease under the eyes (on my cheekbone area) when I sleep with my normal pillow but I do notice that with this, the crease isn’t obvious in the mornings. So in terms of preventing wrinkles on the face, I would say that it works well.
After getting used to the beauty bear, I do think that it helps reduce the strain on my neck. When I wake up, my neck doesn’t feel as tight as before. The back is still a little uncomfortable but I really think its the awkward positions that my body takes when I’m in deep sleep (apparently I’m quite the little contortionist when unconscious).
Do I recommend the Beauty Bear?
I’ve been using my beauty bear for about 3 months now. Overall, I do like it and I don’t regret the investment despite the hefty price tag. As something I use every night, and seeing that it helps reduce the appearance of the little wrinkle on my cheekbone, it’s worth it. Satin pillowcases by themselves aren’t cheap at all, so since this pillow includes one (and it feels amazing!), I would recommend it.
I got the Beauty Bear Memory Foam Pillow off Net a Porter, but other sites like Cult Beauty, Sephora and Nurse Jamie’s website that stock it too!
What are your thoughts about the Beauty Bear? Would you get it?
